Its like in Canada, lacrosse is the national sport but hockey is the passion. Football, like hockey in Canada, is just more popular because that's what people grow up with and pass it down to the next 'generation'.

there's only 16 regular season games, so there's some limitation...supply & demand keeps the interest high (baseball has 162 games, basketball has about 130 games--too long to hold most people's interest)

also, marketing to all those people is good

finally, football players are seen as pros, not overpaid kids, so when they strike, the public doesn't hate them as much as when baseball players strike

Because more people watch football than any other sport and it isn't close. Due to fantasy football and gambling, it's more popular than ever.

Basketball is America's pride. I can't believe that MLB is more popular the the NBA. Baseball is SO boring to watch, I can't stand it. @ Matt S', you think baseball is fun to watch? Let me guess, you must be an idiot.

It is exciting and fun to watch. Being in a city like Philly, your mood for the week is detemined whether the Eagles won or loss. Not to sound super cheesey here, but football really brings a lot of people together.

It's better than soccer and more exciting than baseball or basketball. Where else can you see so much emotion, pain, sweat, blood? ITS HANDS DOWN THE GREATEST GAME OF ALL TIME!

because it is our "passion" as boys and young men to someday become a football player so that we too may also someday be able to make more money in one day by playing a game for 3 hours, then 1 person makes in their entire lifetime...that my friend is why

Football is the ulitmate team sport involving, skill, strategy and prowess. It has none of the "dead time" of baseball and more scoring than hockey. In addition, the NFL has marketed itself to the American audience much better than any other sport, although the NBA would come in a close 2nd.
