As I pronounce it (diff'-rent) there are 2.

However, some folks, with a diff-er-ent accent might say 3.

This has to do with regional variation.

Everyone pronounces it their own way. I've always said and heard it with just 2. But the dictionary may say it has 3.

The e in the middle is silent which is why most people say it as 2 syllables. But when you have 'differ' on it's own then it is pronounced differently (no pun intended). There are alot of words in the English language that are like that.

3, look in the dictionary under the word, it tells you how to say it and you can just count the syllables there.
