Laundry lint comes from the pilling of the clothing fabric as it agitates in the dryer. Fabric has texture and it is the small pieces of the fabric which make up lint....sort of "dust" from the clothing. Some fabrics are looser knit and have cause more lint than tightly woven fabrics. Natural fabrics seem to cause more lint also.

Laundry lint is bits and pieces of the fabrics that you are washing and drying along with the odd tissue left in a pocket and various and sundry other things that get left in pockets and get gathered up with the laundry.

As everyone else has said, it is fibers of the clothing. FYI, it is the dryer that really wears our clothes out. Washing & drying nicer things inside out helps. And for you campers, lint is a great fire starter, so save some lint & use it instead of newspaper to start your next campfire. Great for backpacking, very light weight.

Bits of Clothing that are left in the dryer. The washing process breaks down the fabric and sometimes it produces lint. Just think of it as your clothes shedding.

I think it's tiny particles of linen and cotton and other materials from clothing. I do know for sure, though, that you CAN put laundry lint in the compost pile!!!

Little bits of the fibers that make your clothing, dirt, dead skin, and sometimes tattered paper if you leave reciepts in your pocket. Unless you have kids, then that is a whole different story!
