Commercial Motor Vehicle or CDL is required in the United States to operate any type of vehicle with a weight over 26,000 lb (11,793 kg) including (but not limited to) tow trucks, tractor trailers and buses. [1]

The Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1986 was signed into law on October 27, 1986. The main purpose for the Act was to improve highway safety by making sure truck drivers of tractor trailers and buses have passed a written and driving test to become qualified to drive CMV's, and to remove drivers that are unsafe and unqualified from the highways. The Act continued to give State's the right to issue CDL's, but the national government established minimum requirements that must be met when issuing a CDL.

The Act insures the problems before 1986 by making it illegal to hold more than one license and by requiring States to adopt testing and licensing standards for truck and bus drivers.
A prospective driver must pass a written test on highway safety and as well as test about different parts of a truck with a minum of 30 questions on the test.. To pass this knowledge tests student drivers must correctly answer at least 80 percent of the questions. To pass the driving skills test the student driver must successfully perform all the required driving maneuvers this portion of the test requires. The driving skill test must be taken in a vehicle that the driver operates or expects to operate.

You must be at least 18 years of age to hold a CDL. Under federal law, you must be a commercial driver at least 21 years of age to drive across state lines, transport hazardous materials or transport interstate freight (e.g. mail) within the state.

If you want to learn to drive commercial motor vehicles, you must get a commercial driver's license instruction permit. To obtain a CDL instruction permit, you must pass the CDL general knowledge exam and the other knowledge exams for the vehicles that you want to drive. For example, if you want to learn to operate a tank vehicle and a passenger bus, you must take the general knowledge exam, the tank vehicle exam and the passenger vehicle exam. If you want to learn to drive a school bus, you must take the general knowledge, school bus and passenger vehicle exams.

The CDL instruction permit allows you to drive a commercial vehicle of the class and type shown on the permit only when a person licensed to drive the same type of vehicle is with you. You must hold the CDL instruction permit a minimum of 30 days or show successful completion of C.D.T.S.

You need to get your CDL for the class vehicle you plan to drive plus you may need additional endorsements

i don't believe of it really is fairly necessary for you to bypass the try,,judging from each and each of the girls persons college bus drivers i have considered on the roads in my section,(Detroit). basically take the try like you would possibly want to normallychronic,...at the same time as doing all of your makeup,your nails,and speaking on your cellular telephone !!! (Please do not prepare for artwork in our section,we've enuff,...uh,..er,..ahem,.. college bus "drivers!"
