In their truly natural state carrots are a pale, insipid color and look more like a knobbly swede than a carrot.
To make them more appealing growers have cross bred them (and more recently genetically modified them) to give them a more uniform texture, surface and the typical color we see today.
A lot of other vegetables are like that. For example, completely natural potatoes are really ugly looking things with lumps all over them.
So the reason they're orange is to make them look more appealing. The color is beta carotene which is a natural color found in various plants.

They arent only Orange. They come in white, purple (yes Purple) and yellow as well.

actually in some countries they have purple carrots
and red oranges called blood oranges.
orange due to levels of carotene, one of which, beta carotene, is very good for you.
