There is a difference between "loud and clean" and "loud and crap". The venue will make a difference on this as well as the sound system and the guy mixin the sound. Technology has come a very long way and it is possible now to get to 130 decibels without the perception over being overwhelmingly loud because the newer sound systems are way cool. This is one reason (of many) why most people say the loudest concerts were in the 70's or 80's. The audio technology wasn't quite there yet and many of the top venues were not supported with sound enhancement features like you see today. As far as outdoor shows, most of the soundguys back then just turned it up and let it fly. Today, they have to be concerned with lawsuits from concert goers claiming hearing loss.

In Oct. of 1994, I went to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Ca. for my first Rolling Stones concert. The first opening act was the loudest sh*t I've EVER heard at a concert: Chicago bluesman Buddy Guy. Musta woke up the dead at Forest Lawn!!

Motorhead. You have NOT heard loud until you have seen them live! They were actually in the Guiness Book of World Records as loudest band.

Jackyl was a very close second.

Back in the 90's I went to see the Chemical Brothers at the Roxy in NYC. The bass was SO loud, that after a while I had to leave because it made me nauseous.

What was Rob Zombie's group before he went on his own? That was the loudest - followed closely by Nine Inch Nails.
