by good I mean any chance this company ushers in an alternitive fuel that booms?

To answer your specific question of alternate energy. Not very likely. The company is an electric and gas utility, not an entreprenuer.

Now is it a good investment? The stock is trending up. That is more than can be said for 70% of the stocks today. It also pays a decent dividend. It servers a growing part of the country.

If you are looking for large potential gains, you should perhaps look elsewhere. If you are looking for a relatively safe though not completely safe investment with the probabilty of staying ahead of inflation, DUK is one to consider.

Personally, I would choose COP or APA or DVN or FTO but those are subject to much more price fluctuation.

Good in what sense? It is a low risk stock with a decent dividend yield.

It won't be tripling in value any time soon. But it won't be going bankrupt, either. With a low beta, it will outperform the market when we enter the recession that I think is coming -- but will not do as well as the market when we recover.
