We have a 91 Chevy G20 conversion van ..it has started having a major problem..when you are driving down the road, the check engine light will come on and the van will lose power..the gas pedal will be all the way to the floor but it wont do anything..we have had several friends tell us different things that could be wrong with it, but no mechanic yet..a couple said that it could be the distributor, one said the carburetor, and another said the fuel pump.....does anyone have any suggestions?

i own a repair shop in Tennessee,,and it sounds like you may have a fuel pump going out on it,,it will sense a lack of fuel,,and set the check engine light to go off on it,,it will also cause other sensors to act up,,due to the lack of fuel,,it may just be a bad filter on it,,but if your unsure ,,you can take it to auto zone,,and they will scan it for free,,and tell you what sensor is bad on it,,and help you with a good cure for it,,i do it for a living,,but to be honest with you, there are so many things that can cause what it is doing,,it would be really hard to just guess,,and get the right thing,,if you take it and have it checked out,,then you,ll know for sure,,i hope this help,s

The fastest way to it is to find out the cause of the "c.e.l."
You can eliminate the fuel pump as a cause.
To be safe, and eliminate a possible problem, replace the fuel filter.
A common problem on those vehicles is a knock sensor.
It usually malfunctions at freeway speeds, while accelerating to pass, or hard acceleration. It retards the timing, makes a pinging sound (like cheap gas) and loses power, but regains power and is able to continue driving. It will trip the check engine light.
The knock sensor is located behind the starter (the starter will have to be removed to get to it) there is a single wire connector.
and often the connecter becomes brittle and falls off, or loses conductivity. It is best to replace the sensor while it's apart, and repair the connection. Checker Auto Parts offers a scanning service, but I am not sure of cost.

You had stated that the check engine light came on, then you'd lose power. Why don't you get a thing called a scan tool. They are rather cheap for your year van. And the codes will tell you exactly what is wrong. Is much better than gambling on who said what is bad, and such.

listen to the exhaust does the exhaust sound seem to be from under the hood? Clogged cat converter is what you describe take it to a good muffler shop for a back pressure check. And they have replacement converters
