Most of the best authentic french restaurants in San Francisco are in an area called "the French Quarter"... very tongue-in-cheek, mind you, because it's all of about two blocks long. This area runs along Bush Street from Montgomery up to about Grant. Here you will find Cafe Bastille, Cafe Claude, Le Central, Plouf, and Cafe de la Presse. A little bit more walking will also bring you to Rue Lepic and Fleur de Lys. My personal favorite is Cafe Claude, excellent cuisine and service for the most reasonable prices. As you can imagine, this is a terrific neighborhood to be in on Bastille Day!
A lot of the restaurants named by others above are good, but not really traditional french - more of a continental/california fusion.

For fancy, expensive French, try La Folie.
For nice bistro style food, Chez Spencer.
For French cafe standards, Le Charm.
For contemporary bistrio style food and the best French cheese cart, La Suite.

Le imperative on Bush between furnish and Kearny bistro style eating position that welcomes SF political elite. tremendous nutrition, sturdy service. basically off of Bush between furnish and Kearny is Claude best pal domicile to Cafe Claude. classic french style nutrition at authentic looking expenditures. quite likely the superb Creme Brulee i have ever had. A block down Bush at Beldin alley between Kearny and Sir Bernard Law is Beldin best pal domicile to Plouf yet another of the city's maximum suggested French eating places.

For something very romantic the Carnelian Room or Fleur de Lys, or for the ultimate food my favorite Jardiniere, but its more Californian / French Fusion than traditional French. If you looking for traditional French Fleur de Lys would be my choice.
