1/3x+1=-1/3x-8
Subtract 1/3 x from each side
2/3x+1=-8
Subtract 1 from each side
2/3x=-9
Divide each side by (2/3)
x=13.5
(The person's answer below me didn't multiply 9 by 3)

1/3x + 1 = -1/3x - 8
Step 1: Bring all the figures of the same kind to one side
=> 1/3x + 1/3x = -1 (+) -8
=> 2/3x = -9
=> x = -9 X 3/2
=> x = -27/2
=> x = - 13 1/2

The equation is not well written, it can be interpreted in a number of ways.
1/3 X + 1 = -1/3 X - 8
+1/3 X +1/3 X add 1/3 to both sides of the equation
2/3 X + 1 = -8
-1 -1 subtract 1 from both sides of the equation
2/3 X = -9
X = 3/2(-9) = -27/2 or -13 1/2 Multiphy both sides by 3/2
OR
1/(3x+1) = -1/(3x-8)
(3x +1) (1/(3x+1)) = (3x+1)( -1/(3x-8)) multiply both by (3x + 1)
1 = - (3x+1)/ (3x - 8)
(3x - 8)1 = -(3x - 8)(3x + 1)/(3x - 8) multiply both by (3x - 8)
3x - 8 = -(3x + 1)
3x - 8 = -3x -1
+3x +3x add 3x to both sides
6x - 8 = -1
+8 +8 add 8 to both sides
6x = 7
x = 7/6 divide both sides by 6
OR
1/(3x) + 1 = -1/(3x) - 8
3x( 1/(3x) + 1) = 3x( -1/(3x) -8) multiply both sides by 3x
1 + 3x = -1 - 24x
-1 -1 subtract 1 from both sides
3x = -2 -24x
+24x +24x add 24x to both sides
27x = -2
x= -2/27 divide both sides by 27
It's amazing what some parenthesis can do.

1/3x+1= -1/3x-8
1/3x+1-1= -1/3x -8-1
1/3x +1/3x= -1/3x - 9 + 1/3x
2/3x = -9
2/3x divided by 2/3 = - 9 x 2/3
x = - 27/3 + 2/3
x= 24/3
x= 7

1/3x + 1 = -1/3x - 8
1/3x + 1/3x = -8 - 1
2/3x = -9
x = -9 / (2/3)
x = -13 1/2 or -13.5
I agree with BJ, David F and T .....

wow, its been a while since I've had to do math
first +8 to btoh sides to get:
1/3x+9=-1/3x
then multiply by 3 to get
x+9=-x
then add x to both sides to get:
2x=-9
then divide by 2
x=-9/2
that make sense? It does to me

When writing an equation always show parenthesis. Is it (1/3)*x
or 1/(3*x)? Same question for right side.
