Space - Lightyears, A.U.

Small objects - microcon, nanometer

Navy - Nautical mile

Other common - millimeter, centimeter, meter, feet, inches, yards

Horses - Hand

(A hand is four inches. The story behind this unit of measurement is that a kind went to measure his favorite horse. Not having a device to measuer with, he used the only thing he knew would be consistent: the palm of his hand. Since then, the hand has been the unit of measure for equines. The letters HH or hh after the numbers stand for Hands High. The single letter H or H may be used, standing just for "hands". )

Models, Arts - Sometimes, the length of a human head is used as a unit of measure. A person is about 7 heads length.

The base unit of distance in the Systeme Internationale d’unities is meter and is defined as 1 650 763.73 of the wave length, in vacuo of the orange light emitted by
36 Kr86 in transition 2p10 to 5d5.

There are multiples and submultiples for these units.

In the US, we use inches and feet. Pretty much everywhere else the more logical metric system is used. The metric system operates in increments of ten(100 meters in a kilometer, 10 decimeters in a meter) while the US system operates in twelves(12 inches in a foot, and 12 divisions of an inch).

In most sciences, metric is used. My guess is that meters are the unit of distance you are looking for.

Depends what you are referring to. The System Internationale unit of distance is the meter, which works out as follows:

10 millimetres (mm) = 1 centimetre (cm)

100 cm = 1 metre (m)

1000m = 1 kilometre (km)

In physics, everything is expressed in metres though.

1 mile = 1.6Km

System Internationale units are based on the meter.
Imperial (i. e. English) units are based on the inch and foot.

All other units are multiples of these bases.
