Which cola is best? Coke? Pepsi? Faygo? How long? Do I scrub it with anything afterwards? Will this also work for flatware that might not be silverware... or that little cap on the sink that's starting to rust? I've also heard using aluminum foil like a scouring pad works. Does it? Is it bad for the metal? What about cast iron?

To a certain extent, any carbonated beverage will remove rust. This is because the gas used, carbon dioxide, when mixed with water, makes carbonic acid. To make rust, the iron oxidizes, which is why rust is also called iron oxide. What the carbonic acid does is drive the reaction the other way, which is called "reduction." If you read the ingredients of Coke and , now that you know it's an acid doing the work, you can see why Coke works - it also has phosphoric acid as an ingredient.

One unusual use for Coke is as a rust-control substance—the phosphoric acid in Coke converts iron oxide to iron phosphate, and as such can be used as an initial treatment for corroded iron and steel objects being renovated, etc. The acid can be used to anodize titanium according to various websites.[25] Corroded battery terminals on cars are often corrected through the use of Coca-Cola.

just use salt, like when you salt a new cast iron skillet.

it works as an abrasive and will do the job with a small amount of water added into it and a paper towel. If their stuffed baked on to it, the soak it in hot water for like ten minutes before doing the above

Leave the item to be cleaned soaking in Coke. We used it in the auto shop all the time.

Look up mythbusters on Discovery channel, they busted the mythg on it. Not entirely true as far as the cola.

Aluminum foil has worked for me, but need lots of elbow grease.

That was on an episode of mythbusters and was busted I believe. It was shown to not be an effective way to clean anything or remove anything.
