My wife is from the Philippines, Just this morning a black guy asked her how to say flowers in Spanish.

I'm sure this isn't exactly what you mean by your question but I'll answer for the 2 points anyway. I've lived in Michigan my entire life (36) years and currently live about a mile from Canada. I guess I never stopped to realize how similar our "accents" and many other customs or cultural traits are between us Michiganians and many Canadians until I began travelling abroad. Funny because I usually think Canadians are mistaken for Americans when they travel abroad but pretty much everywhere I go people ask me if I am and/or assume I'm Canadian.

Yes. I'm fair-skinned, blue eyed and blonde-haired, and look Scandanavian.

The first time I went overseas, I went on a Danish airline to Denmark. The air hostesses all assumed I was Danish and talked to me in Danish all the time, even after I told them I only spoke English.

Funny thing is, they got angry, as if I'd deliberately deceived them, or I was really Danish but denying my heritage!

My mother looks exactly like me, and the same thing happened when she went to Germany, except the Germans were less weird about it (plus we are from Germany a couple of generations back).

Yes - I sometimes have people speak Spanish to me. Also, the first time I went to Greece - I was sitting on a bench by myself waiting for my hubby and someone just came up to me and started speaking Greek. I just looked at them and said I speak English. They didn't so they gave me a strange look and walked away. (I think they were asking for directions, which I thought was really funny!)

What cracks me up is the judgments people make when seeing someone and "assuming" they are something they're not. But I've found when someone speaks a different language to me now and I don't understand them, they are still nice about it.

i've got had 2 people say I looked spanish previously, yet i do no longer think of I do. somebody else instructed me that I looked center eastern, yet I even have somewhat gentle pores and skin, so i do no longer see how all and sundry ought to think of i became into center eastern. consistent with danger, they meant eastern ecu?
