YES. Just so you know if your wage is comparable to theirs and your not being cheated.

No. What a person makes is their business.

Why not share? Because why should someone that is working at a company longer than me know that I am making more money than them? If I earned it by working hard and doing the right things, and they are relying upon their longevity to get them their money, it will only cause trouble. And you will also have some people going all "sue-happy" stating everything from discrimination, unfair labor practices, and so on. There would soon come an end to the people getting raises based on merit. Then why try hard if all you are going to make is the same as the loser at the next desk? Money is one of the incentives that companies use to get people to work.

I think there should be a wage scale with everything above board ... you may THINK you've got a great salary based on merit, while in fact the boss has TOLD you so ... if you have no idea what the fellow next to you is earning, you really have no idea about your worth in the company ... a lot of wages are very arbitrary, and based on what an employee accepts, rather than what he SHOULD have ...

Yes, I certainly do. There needs to be a way to achieve fairness and equity in wages earned. If they are kept secret, then there could be people doing the same job and earning different wages. That is a problem women in this country have been fighting for decades. Equal pay for equal work. Knowing what everyone earns is the way to insure that is being done.

Chow!!

they can always know in the public sector (government). otherwise, it's a matter of organization of the company. some companies have publicized pay scales, most don't. since, of course, women and minorities make less!

i think it's a matter of personal preference. should they? probably should. but they don't have to. it's the difference between public school and private school. private schools can do whatever they want b/c they are self funded. think of it this way...if you had an employee, and they were your STAR, BREAD AND BUTTER. losing that employee would be detrimental to your company so you want to through benefits their way. But you don't want to demoralize your other employees, either...so wouldn't you prefer to keep salaries confidential? and if you are the person making more money, would you want to be the center of controversy??

but of course, it's a two way street b/c the confidentiality also can be abused to give unwarranted pay rates. in the end, i say that workers probably should not know, it just causes more problems than necessary.

Yup.. bc companies pride themselves on being EOE but yet employees wages vary greatly.. and not just for diff experience levels. I think there should be a set scale.

No, I don't think so. If you are thinking you should be earning more, you should think about what your contribution is to the company you work for, what your value is, and then present those opinions to your boss. If they agree fine, if not, then look elsewhere.

No. It's not your business and most likely all it will do is piss you off and be a disadvantage to your performance as an employee.

Absolutely not.

Knowing what other people make only pisses people off. It is a true destroyer of morale.
