Strong stomach muscles are a definite bonus during pregnancy. They can help you to maintain good posture and minimize back pain during labor.
Some doctors will tell you to avoid sit-ups because they fear that the crunching movement may cause trauma to the abdomen or uterus. Most, however, agree that sit-ups are safe for pregnant women up until the 20th week of pregnancy. After that it is best to avoid lying on your back for more than five or ten minutes at a time.
If you decide that you want to continue doing sit-ups anyway, just be sure to only do them for 5 to 10 minute intervals. Either way, it is important to discuss any exercise program with your doctor before beginning it. Your individual circumstances may warrant a change from the norm.
If you start to feel fatigued or out of breath, your body is telling you to stop. Make sure you listen to your body and take a break.

Skip the sit ups and swim. The water will support your body and you won't be scrunching the baby. However, ask your doctor before doing any excercises.
Many places have excercise classes designed specifically for pregnant women. If you like excercising, check these out. You may meet a few new friends and develop some mutual support for your pregnancy and new baby time.
Exercise tips and facts
Exercise needs to be moderate and not put you at risk for slips and falls. Good forms of exercise include: swimming, low-impact aerobics, and walking.
A pregnant woman's body produces relaxin, which is a hormone that loosens pelvic joints in order to ease childbirth, but it also loosens other ligaments and joints, making it easier to sprain or strain joints such as the knee or ankle.
Try and exercise on a regular basis, at least three times a week.

Yes, it is safe to do. Abdominal crunches also help with the birthing process, and are effective if you will need to have a c-section as it helps keep the abdominal muscles strong. In the later trimesters, you will need to do a modified version of an upper crunch with pillow supporting your back. Make sure to take more care in the following trimesters, and discuss all with your doctor as every pregnancy is different.
In the book "what to expect when you're expecting" - you will see versions of exercises that are safe to do when you're pregnant. If your OB did not give you this book, it can be found very cheaply on ebay.
Yoga & pilates have now become savvy for pregnant woman. There's a lot of great stretching and toning that is safe for pregnancy.

It is safe to do sit ups during pregnancy. Your going to need all the ab strength you can get. How do you think you push that baby out. I did sit up all through my pregnancy. Later, when I got really big it hurt to lay on my back for any length of time, so I did them standing up against a wall. Sometimes I used a ball ( a big exercise ball) against the wall to add some difficulty. Just do what you feel comfortable with.

NO!!!!!! Doing any type of ab work outs can cause complications in your pregnancy. Like an uterine abrupter or hemerging. If you are worried about your muscles becoming to lose or not going back to the way they were, then you should try pregnancy yoga. It will not only keep your muscles tight but will also help you with your labor. So please do not do them and if you are then stop for yours and your baby's health. If you would like a list then you may e-mail me at felixxmoma@yahoo.com and I can send you one that works well.

That surely can't be good for the baby. Why would you want to do them anyway? You're gonna get bigger whether you want to or not! No need to exercise to flatten your stomach. Congrats on the new little one though.

i dont think it is. i think u should try not to overuse your abdominal muscles as they have to be quite stretchy and flexible not too tight. try doing a search for appropriate exercises while pregnant the NHS suggest swimming and cycling, or maybe try yoga
