social beings that we are; is it possible that because we value youth and sexiness over expierence and wisdom we have discarded our elders, and with lonliness or isolation being the cause of some mental illness. Are we as a society fault?

No. Alzheimer's isn't the type of mental illness you can control with some pills and/or therapy. That's what would happen if someone was simply ignored or de-valued.
It's an actual disease of the brain. The neurons are coated in plaque which results in their death. This causes ONGOING brain atrophy, memory loss, personality changes and more. It's a horrible disease and right now it's got no cure. The medicines only slow it down a little.
