Perfect question for me as I just got rid of cable in favor of Direct TV.
I am getting more channels for less money, better picture, and better sound. I am shocked really.
The reason i bothered to stay so long with cable is because I had a package that included my high speed internet connection.
Funny thing is they split the cable internet into two speeds, so to get what I had for years I would have to pay more money, which isn't fair because I originally signed up for internet with them back when there was only full speed. I felt betrayed and began waiting for the day I could dump my cable company. Well full speed DSL is now available here, and I am hooking it up early next week. I will then take all the equipment right to my former cable company and resist the urge to throw it at them. I will walk away quite satisfied. Direct TV has much higher customer service rating.
BTW: as far as satellite going down or having bad reception, that is a not a real comparison because if you drive by your cable companies main office, guess what you see....that's right, satellite dishes...cable is basically satellite TV piped through a cable into your home instead of getting it directly from the satellite yourself. Cable's lie is now exposed!

In order of best technology for the requirement (multimedia telephone, internet, television and movies on demand), my opinion is Fiber To The House (FTTH telephone company service), Cable and satellite last. It's true that the trunk portions of cable are often fiber optic lines, but usually not all the way to the house. Also, the newest equipment being installed is from the telephone companies like Verizon.

Cable. It doesn't (usually) go out on you in bad weather. You don't have to mount a dish on your house and drill holes in the walls to bring in the special wiring. You can often get a lot of nifty features with the cable, plus it is often offered as a bundle wth cable modem Internet service. Many housing areas have rules against putting up a dish, even though they are often ignored.

The one that gives you the channels you want for the price you want. They both are pretty much the same.
