Because this was the first legislation since the 1860's to stop the Jim Crow laws and segregation .
Also The KKK used to be heavily entrenched in the Democratic party .
The only one left is Byrd and he'll either die or retire soon
BTW The link is to a speech by Malcom X it is very powerful and sums up a lot of frustration in 1964(Ballot or the Bullet)

Well, the Dems don't actually believe the stuff they say. They just like the stuff they say to sound as if they care. If you look at history, the Dems have kept the "underprivilaged" in that exact position with all the "social" (a.k.a. gov handouts or redistribution of wealth) programs. Don't get me wrong, social programs have their place when they are a "hand up" and not a "hand out". Ya know the saying "teach a man to fish and he can feed himself for a lifetime". That should be the ONLY purpose of social programs in our representative republic.
Dems don't care about the little guy because the little guy is usefull in pitting them against the other social econimic classes. I think it is called "envy". "Look at what they have" the Dems say to the little guy. "Why shouldn't you have some of that?" It is all about keeping people in their place and keeping them dependent on the gov system. Poor, dumb people are much easier to control and fool if you have a socialist agenda. As socialism sounds great and looks great on paper, but is terrible when actually applied by human beings.
The vote against the civil rights bill is exactly where they stood on this issue (even today) and falls right in line with what I said above. The Dems are great at "the song and dance" at election time. But when it comes down to it, they rarely, if ever, follow through on their promises (at that, I thank God). Well, except for the "redistribution" of anybodies wealth BUT their own. That is one they don't mind following through on. That's right, lets tax those terrible rich people (who after all are our employers) and give to the poor, eventhough they have not worked for that money in any way shape or form. AND thanks to the new tax burden, you or your neighbor loose their job. Yea, that is the Dems idea of equal rights.

If you were honest with yourself, you would know the answer. What has the Democrat party done to lift any minority in the last 50 years.
They have turned a once proud, strong family ethnic groups into what they are today. The Dems need to keep minorities down. They do this by making promises that the government will be there to help. As long as minorities believe help is on the way, there is no need to stand up and help yourself. When you look at the great men and women that are minorities, they got to where they are by their own hard work, not because any government program. The government cannot and will not help any but themselves.
The Dem's voted to keep the black man down than and have fooled him into believing he cannot do it by himself now.

Democrats are evil.
Why did so many belong to the KKK in the 1940's and 1950's?
OK, that's a joke, the KKK part is true of the southern Democrats at least.
But the truth is the American public gives Democrats a pass when it comes to asking them the tough questions, and they don't give Republicans the same pass.
If we demanded more and better answers from our politicians instead of sound bytes and grandstanding, we'd have a better country.

They left the Democratic social gathering through fact their previously arch-conservative social gathering began shifting in the direction of the left with FDR, formally swapped aspects with the Republicans with the civil rights rules, turning out to be the liberal social gathering. The Southern Democrats became disgusted and distinctive left.

The Democrats, led by Johnson were also the ones who dumped the entire Social Security funds into the general Funds so that politicians can buy votes by manipulating the money sent to any area for community works.
The mis-deeds of both parties are legion! they are both simply the two sides of a bad coin!

The majority of the Democrats in power of the time were southerners, as well as conservatives - many of whom had more of a stake in keeping their states in the "status quo" with
their established "Jim crow" laws, than in voting for minorities to
be able to be on equal ground with them.
The main reason was just fear of change.

It really doesn't matter who voted yes or no. What matters is why is it just a bill? Shouldn't all Americans have a right to vote under the Constitution?

That was a different democratic party back then. Before the Neocon movement in the 1970's when Nixon was elected the Dems were very conservative in thier leanings.
