Right now, Intel's Core Duo for laptops is on top of the game. It won't come cheap, however.

You can read reviews about the technology Core Duo uses here:
http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/07/14/core2_duo_knocks_out_athlon_64/

Note: Although the link above applies the desktop "Core 2 Duo", it is essentially the same technology that the Core Duo for laptop uses.

The Core Duo is an extension of the Pentium M (aka Centrino), which has been leading laptops for quite some time. The biggest attractions is low power consumption (extending battery life) and performance per MHz. Although AMD has led for many years in this department, Intel is finally back on top with its newest line of CPUs. The Centrino, if that's still an option out there, is the next best option...

You asked for an opinion on which is better but you have to define what then you say you don't want a personal opinion? You have to define what you mean by better, is it faster, able to do complex mathematical functions, a chip that doesn't run too hot? a laptop with a long battery life? What is it you want from your laptop? I have built computers since 1990 and networks so I am bound to have a biased opinion of what I think is bestit is the nature of the business

I totally switched to AMD around 1997. At that point AMD not only was better than Intel, but also kept prices down.
Even with technical people you will never be able to avoid personal bias. In other words, personal opinions based on their experience.
If you really don't want opinions, then none of the answers here will be of any use to you....
BTW, I have built about 20 computers in the last 7 years...

Intel Core Duo... Don't buy a Dell, they are poorly made. The exterior is plastic and now apparently they catch on fire because of the battery. The battery is Sony and Dell lovers will say it is Sony's fault. Here is a little insider info, HP and Apple laptops run on Sony batteries too. Guess what, no fires. Why? They test their notebooks. I have a Lenovo/IBM laptop and an Apple, I like them both. Apple now has Intel processors and can run Mac OS or Windows XP

AMD athlon if it is 64 bit. It is faster than an Intel! Unless the Intel is dual core. Go for which ever has the higher Ghz.

the mac's with the intel are the best buy. for the same price as you pay for a pc that only does the job of one computer you can get one that does the job of 2 computers. you also get a lot of other things with the mac, the have better plug-ins, the power cord is a magnet so if you trip over it it just falls off and does not hurt your computer, they are colcked as the fastest (mass marketed) computers in the world.

ps, you CAN run windows on them now so if you only do windows mac still has you covered. or you can have any OS you want.

Buy Apple - iMAc or Macbook, You will have a trouble free life, believe me !!
You can run XP, from Apple also you get all system and most likely all aplication, what you ever need, so you don't have to spend extra money for that plus you can learn for free something new.

You can stay virus, spam and other stuff free by using Firefox browser on Apple, If you need XP, still can run that on same computer without any problem.

Don't buy any cheep PC !!!!! It is not cheep, you get exactly, what are you paying for - garbage !!! You pay litle more, you are gonna be happy, no phone calls, no wasted time, no freezing.

Very important - configuration chose after you know for 100%, what is your primary use for your computer !!!!!!!!!!

Cheers

I think personally Athlon for desktop and Intel for Notebooks.

Down to price and what you use it for.
Athlon is great as cheap and good for games etc.
Intel is better for serious maybe, better for business stuff with dual core processors etc...

I don't think it really matters as long as is reasonably fast and has at least 512MB RAM - preferably more. I think Intels tend to come more in Notebooks and so for a Notebook I would be happier with Intel.

However, for leisure and my main PC I have a Sempron as is cheaper to build and still does what I want from it.
