You DEFINITELY need the tan. It's absolutely essential! Hell, a lifeguard only really serves everyone in 3 ways: 1) by saving people's lives. 2) by whistling at everyone who does something wrong. and 3) by being TOTAL eye-candy. :-p
A lifeguard's job is sitting down on his chair, 50% of the time. 30% of the time, he's whistling at people or yelling at the fat kid hogging up the water slide. 19% of the time, he's hitting on some people. And last, but not least, 1% of the time, someone's drowning and he saves them.
If you ask me, having an AWESOME tan and being eye-candy takes care of 99% of the job (provided that you hit on some people and blow your whistle from time to time). Otherwise, knowing how to swim only covers 1% of the job. It would be nice if you knew how to swim, though. :-p

F*ck! I feel for you, man. There are "Level 3" and "Level 4" people around here who have no goddamn idea what sarcasm is. Just reading your question sounds pretty correct to me, since I've never really seen a lifeguard swim (or rescue someone), except on Baywatch. Lmaooo! If I saw David Hasselhoff running towards me with a flotation device, I'd drown MYSELF! :-D

I recently completed the lifeguarding course. And..in a somewhat disappointing way....lifeguards dont actually know how to swim. Doing the lifeguarding courses, I've realised, all you need to do is stay above water LONG. (as in treading) In certain courses getting to the final course, you will need to be able to swim many laps, all of which...realy..can be any kinda swim! Just as long as you do the laps in the time alotted.
Nonetheless, I wish you the best of luck! =]

I'm going to answer your question by asking a question.
If you were drowning, would you want your lifeguard to know how to swim or not know how to swim?
Tans are optional... especially during the winter months.

yes you need to be able to swim. also there is a test that you need to pass. you have to be able to swim a certain distance in a certain time, this depends on the state. A tan.. well sitting on the chair all day will give you a tan so you don't really have to worry about that.
good luck
