This is sort of personal choice. I got married about a year and a half ago. I sort of use both. I still have so much in my maiden name (bills, license, ect) but for work and person uses I use my married name. So expecially when I am signing things with my maiden name I use both last names. I do not really like the hyphenated last names but as you say if the guy you are dating/marrying last name sounds funny then you might want to think about it. Maybe it just means you have not found the right guy yet. A year and a half later I am still trying to get used to my new last name. Speaking of last names I heard that Lauren Bush (the presidents neice) was dating Ralph Lauren's Son. I think she should definately keep her maiden name if they were to get married because Lauren Lauren is horrible. haha

Taking a mans last name is supposed to show a sign of love. It also show the rest of the world that you are a proud married woman who respects her spouse enough to pick up his last name and make it your own. Just because your boyfriends last name may be corny or something, doesn't mean that he isn't the right guy for you. It just means that his name is as unique as you both are. If a book title is stupid or different, allot of people wont read the book, but if we all know the name of the book ahead of time, odds are, we will read it. Get it before you end up missing out and settling on left-overs...
until..

My mother was married twice
My wife was married twice (currently her second)
Both times they took the last name.
I have a daughter and son. We both did not like the sound of kids with hyphenated names. What happens if my daughter got married? Would she carry a double hyphenated name? Would she take her husband's name? I hope she will chose the latter.
The wife would show honor to her husband by taking his last name. If you are married and "become one," as the Bible says, then the name should be same.
I know some women are well known by their last name, they do not want to lose that distinction. But marriage should be equal, not one name above another.
I'm glad my wife honors me, I respect and love her with all my heart.
How can two agree unless they walk together?

Where I live in Canada you can't even do that legally anymore.
But I think (for everyday, non-official use) I'd combine my last name with my husband's.
I don't think it's outdated to take the last name of the one you love as long as you don't forget who you are and where you're from.

when it's hyphenated, that means the guy is taking the same last name. i haven't seen that many hyphenated last names out there. i guess the girls are keeping their last names. it's part our slow evolution to give woman complete equal rights (and i really do mean it is a slowwwwww progression).
here's a personal experience of mine: i didn't change my last name for a good six months. my husband asked me "why didn't you change your last name yet? it's like getting married without the rings." i then realized that i had my last name for 23 years, it's part of my identity. so when i changed it, i felt like a part of me left. i changed my last name for many reasons really. my mom never changed her last name when she got married. so when they call her by my last name...i got really tired of correcting them all the time, so i don't want my son to go through that. also...my last name is absolutely common for my ethnicity (it's like the "smith" of my race)...and i don't like people having the same exact name like mine...so i didn't mind the having an unique name now. the last name grew on me.

it doesnt sound right because youve been living with the same last name for so long - nothing will sound good.
