That's a tough decision. I would choose a career that I enjoy and doesn't much money I guess. Why not you double major in business and child development and have the best of both worlds? Or at least minor in business and major in child development . . . or vice versa? It all depends on which college you go to that has a dual degree or a dual major.

I would choose a career that I enjoyed. What's the point of all the money in the world if you're miserable and dread going to work each day? Money isn't everything in life. Sure it helps sometimes, but it will not buy happiness in the long run. Find something you enjoy and you'll never have to "work" again!

I wouldn't assume that certain careers are necessarily more lucrative than others.

For example, lawyers are generally assumed to be rich while artists are poor; however, many lawyers work for non-profits and may earn less than a successful sculptor or actor. One teacher in a poorer district may be paid poorly, while another can earn a handsome sum. Many personal trainers earn more than doctors.

I would study whatever it is you are passionate about - and, if earning money is important to you, find a way to get paid handsomely for what you do.

In addition, I would also consider other lifestyle elements. Such as work environment (big or small, indoors or outdoors, cubicle or home office). Consider time (steady 9 to 5 work, seasonal work (like tax accountant or school teacher), flexible or make-your-own scheduling, lots of work to take home, big projects that are all-consuming. Consider whether you are working for yourself (must be very discipled and self-motivated) or for a company, boss or team. Consider fringe benefits. Consider housing - is your job limited to certain geographic area. Is the job conducive to starting a relationship or a family (investment banking, the priesthood and med school are not)

There is a lot more to consider than just passion and money. The career you choose, and how you choose to pursue it will affect all aspects of your life. Plan carefully.

Business is a good choice (if you want ulcers), but it is also a very competitive career. If you want advancement, you are going to have to work your caboose off. Long hours, even week ends.
On the other hand, child development is also a lot of work, but so much more satisfying. If you are willing to make sacrifices and work hard for either, you will find your niche eventually.

I'm doing that right now! I have been teaching for 8 years - I could so easily go into a different position and probably make twice as much, but I love working with the kids I work with (plus having the summers off is an added bonus!). I make enough to feed my family and keep a roof over my head - to me, that's all that really matters.

From my experience, find your passion and make it your job, no matter how much or little you may be paid. Making money at a job you're unhappy with isn't worth it, and it won't last. You health will be affected, your life will be shorter and you'll be miserable. If you're happy with your job you can make any paycheck work. It took me 20 years of working various jobs to get that figured out.

Edited to add: CharlieBrown I DO love my job, so I don't have days that I 'just don't feel like going in'. I'd do my same job if they paid me half as much.

Well I've learned from experience that even with a high salary, you can be miserable in your careeer. So I went back to school to get a major in what I wanted to do in the first place, even though "initially" it does not pay as well. Besides having to budget a lot more than I'm used to, I am very happy with my choice. I'm a lot more relaxed and able to spend more time with friends and family.

Go with your heart.

I feel that you should do something you enjoy, yeah you need money but money doesnt buy happiness and if workign with kids is something that you desire to do then that is what I would do, dont give up your dream. You will get more out of life enjoying what you do.
