Apple or mystery snails are a good choice. They grow very slowly and will not reproduce. They are big enough to not be picked on by the Betta and are not a large consumer of oxygen so there will not be a large increase in the bio-load of the bowl.

I've never had a problem with apple/mystery snails. They grow only about as big around as a quarter, but won't reproduce on their own. Most of the smaller snail type reproduce without a mate.

I wouldn't recommend trying to mix the 2 as Bettas have been known to kill just about any Snail in their tanks.

Ocean snails, definetly. And no offense, sly2kusa, but betas don't kill snails. Only the same of their species, except for mating season, which the femme and male will only be allowed together for a very short span of time to breed.

zebra snails tend to stay small, but they also take over tanks...bettas have been known to kill snails (of any size) in their tanks...
