Do what Tolkien and C.S. Lewis did--mine the fields of mythology--the dwarves' names came largely from Nordic tales, and while the Elvish languages were truly invented languages, they owe a lot, of course, to Middle English and German. Research a variety of cultures for their folktales; characters in those can become your leading men and women, and carry with them the nuances of meaning and character traits--perfectly legitimate because folklore belongs to everyone by definition--and names can be borrowed (or altered--think of Ursula LeGuin's naming patterns) with sensitivity and respect. The call number for folklore in your public library is 398.2. Happy browsing and adapting!
