You can shave off a little wood with a plane if you are working on a long flat surface, like the top of a door. Or use a gouge or chisel if the surface is not flat, as in carving.

well you're talking two different cuts and you're wanting two different tools.(an neither one is an awl).To gouge you use a wood chisel,to shave you use a plane.
