What I usually do (and yes, most of the time it works) is while falling asleep I'll start the beginning part out consciously. As you get deeper and deeper into sleep mode, the story will carry out on it's own then. A lot of times I even start my dream out from the one I had the night before so I can finish it. It's pretty fun and easy to do once you get the hang of it. =)

Dreams as Ive noticed them is like your mind backflushing things you havent thought about for a while or things you've been trying not to think about it, and the past.

I have noticed that at certain points in my dream state I CAN CONTROL what I dream about!!!!! However it is rare, I have no mechanism for inducing the controlling state, and it doesnt last long because at that point im sleeping very lightly. Ive noticed during those times I am completely aware that I am dreaming, I think that is part of what gives me the control. In contrast to dreams where youre afraid of something so much that you believe youre actually living it and in danger and wake up with your heart pounding.

You probably could not make yourself have a detail oriented dream, but if you'll think on something for about a half an hour (almost meditate on it while you're going to sleep) while laying in the bed, it's possible that you'd dream about it. This works sometimes and sometimes it does not.

Usually if you think a lot about something right before you go to bed, you dream about it 60% of the time. And the other 40 is just times when it's decided on something else.
