Hi, I have a 3 ton outside A/C unit. When the air comes on the unit outside is making a horrendous high squealed squeaking noise. Sounds like the fan, is there a way to add some oil to it?

that could be your fan motor's bearing have it check, maybe you could put some oil in it, but it would just be a temporary solution it would come back anytime if the bearing is already defective and it might just exacerbate the defect and contaminate other moving parts. I'm pretty sure that its the bearing if its of the bearing type or the bushing if its bushing type. have it check to find the real defect, don't put off another day because the armature could be damage since it could be now off-center.

Theres no question its the fan.... You do need to have a Certified AC repair man out there. Call one soon to with the high temps we are having your fan motor will stay on for long periods WD-40 will not take care of this the bearings are unreachable with that spray.

One more thing your AC unit is powered by 220 volt you don't get a second chance to learn from your mistakes with that

ADDING TO OTHER ANSWERS Never ever use wd40 or penetrating oil on any electric motor. If your motor does have oil plugs on the top and bottom a 30w non detergent motor oil is best. Try to locat a zoom spout oiler. They come pre filled with different types of oil. Try Home Depot or Lows. If it has been making noise for anymore than a day or two plan on replacing motor.

Before you spend the money, you might look to see if any part of the cover is loose. It may be the vibrations from the motor transferring to part of the metal work. Just see if all the screws are snug. Especially if anyone has done anything to it recently.
