please don't take it too hard

from malaysians point of view the word 'indon' is just a short form for the words 'people of indonesia', that's all. no offence

but if the word sounds offensive to their ears, they should frankly/honestly tell their malaysian friends. otherwise they wouldn't know it and will continue using the word

so don't feel offended. please inform your indonesian friends

I've heard Indonesians referring to themselves as such. I did not know it was offensive. I guess in English it's Indonesian, but perhaps in the local languages, there's no version of that. So perhaps saying 'Indon' is easier than "orang Indonesia". I'll ask my friends who are from there what they'd prefer...mean time...why don't you tell us what you'd prefer?

Because the Indonesia itself have so many ethnics. Like Malaysia, the Malays is also varies from different ethnics like Jawa, Bugis, Acheh, Minang which at previous time (before Independence time) is miggrated from Indonesia. Also Petani from southern Thailand and also Kelantanese and Trengganunese which different langguage and cultures.
But we usually do not refer them as their ethnics but only we call ourself orang MELAYU.
So do the nicknames of Indon, because so many Indonesia, we do not know which ethnic they are belong to, so we just call them Indon.
Rasanye enggak ada apa2 yg salah dan kureng enak dong. Tidak ada maksud yg tersurat atau tersirat

What's the problem with that?Isn't that the short form for Indonesian. So if you're an Indonesian and we don't know each other, what should we call you? Maybe you preferred to be called with "hey" or "ooi"!!!!!!

The same way the Japanese were referred to as "Japs" and the blacks as "******" which we all know are offensive and now go by politically correct terms.
It's an easier way to collectively identify you guys I guess... as long as it's not meant to demean or degrade you or your culture in any way, I don't see the fault really.
We've been calling Westerners as "Mat Sallehs", "Gwailohs" *Chinese* for years now.
However having said that, I do dislike the way Indonesians call us Chinese females as "Amoys", that to me is offensive!

honey.....dont take it negatively, c'mon, it was just to make it easier for us to pronounce it quick & short. i dont think its offensive.... pokoknye lebih senang disebut gitu...
just like we call western ppl....we dont call them europen or americans but normally we call them "mat saleh" or "orang putih". and i wonder y u guys dont like to be called like that. do u want us to call u according of your ethnic? maybe..acheh, javanese etc? its really hard for us to do that bcoz u guys look similar to each other.
