When you get divorced and you choose to take your maiden name back, do you get a new social security number? Someone had told me that, and I think it is bogus. You don't have to change it when you get married, so why would you have to change it when you get divorced.

No, because your SSN is your nearly permanent ID from your birth. Whether you change your name or not, your SSN always identifies you as an individual.
What you may want to do, but it's not mandatory, is perhaps alert the SSN office that you've changed your name and that you want this to reflect on your card. That way they can issue a new card with the same number under your maiden name. But no, your SSN never changes because you've divorced. Whoever told you that is misinformed.

No you don't get a new SS#, that number is yours for life. The only thing they'll change is your last name if you plan to take your real name back. I know because because I to went through a divorce and I change my last name back to my real last name. The people at your area Social Security Office should be able to answers that for you too.

NO

you never change your social security number unless in the case of drastic fraud issues.

YOu DO have to have your card changed back to your maiden name, as well as your driver's license, passport, credit cards, etc. You need to get a new CARD, not a new NUMBER. (just like you did after you GOT married)

You are correct. Your SSN is yours for life. Protect it. If your state uses your SSN as your driver's license number, have it changed. If a criminal gets hold of that nine-digit number, than can make your life a living heck.
But again, you are right, that number does not change, ever. Except if you go into a witness protection program, then they will issue you a new number!

If it still carries your maiden name no you don't have to change the card. If you changed your name on the card when you got married then yes when you change it back you will need another one

You're right - it's bogus. You will keep your Social Security Number. What you will have to do is change your name with SSA so that they can update their records.

No, your SSN is with you for life, you had that number before you were married, so no. Even IF that was the case, with this war on terrorism, and all the laws in place, it's not going to happen.
