Thank you for asking such a sensitive question. I know we all have personal tastes, but I think it is infinitely better to be eclectic. I like all kinds of music, just as I have all kinds of moods and feelings. Our vocabulary in music should be broad and our pure joy in listening imaginative and free.

Several.
All genres of music are connected in some way, they all share the same roots and are influenced by each other. Part of truly being able to appreciate music is knowing where it came from. How can one understand rock n roll if they have never heard the blues? I mean, there is so much great music and so many talented people out there, it would be a shame to limit yourself to only one genre.

I was a music major in college. I think it is important to develop an appreciation for a variety of different types of music. I don't regularly listen to R&B, Jazz, or Opera etc but I can enjoy them. Some types of music are harder for me to enjoy than others (I don't particularly like heavy metal) but I do at least try to switch from the Contemporary Christian (KTIS) or Country (K102) stations to listen to other music occasionally.

i guess it won't hurt to listen to several kinds of music coz like what others say, you have to have an open mind. but i guess when you choose the kind of music you like to listen to, you'll aim to listen to that type more often, right? maybe just respect other kinds of music apart from your choice/s and let it stay at that.

IMHO, several - it allows you to fully enjoy the whole scope of music.
Example: Yes, I love rock and roll, especially classic rock and hard rock. But I also like to be challenged as a listener - so I go to jazz artists like Miles Davis and Bill Evans. Sometimes I like something that can shape my mood - so I go to the blues or reggae. Sometimes, I like something peaceful - so I go to classical or even new age (the real stuff, not smooth jazz). And, of course, when I need to clear out the pipes, I whip out the speed metal and punk.

I listen to several but I am open-minded. If you choose to listen to one, there is nothing wrong with that. It depends what you like and it should not matter what other people think.

It's better to listen to several. If you ask the musicians in your favorite band what their influences are, they will tell you several different types. You'll be surprised at what's out there.

Several. Or at least somewhat of a variety. Sometimes listening to one can help you appreciate the other more.
