I am specializing in either Technical Writing or Teaching of writing at a community college level. Please tell me your experience with this and if you like it, hate it, etc. Also, how much can I expect to make just starting out after I graduate with this Master's Degree (from a California State University)?

Shouldn't you have looked into this before you got your master's degree?

I have a very similar degree, and I love teaching. The good news for you is that almost all universitites/comm colleges hire writing teachers on a regular basis. Right now, I'm teaching a Web-based course plus two regular classroom courses, but I'm also working on my doctorate. I make a competitive salary, but that really depends on the state and school. Community colleges pay around $2,000 a semester for each course if you are adjunct (part time), but it can vary from less to more than that amount. Another plus for you is that technical writing is a really hot field right now because of the vast number of college graduates in business, engineering, and computer-related fields who CANNOT WRITE. You'd probably be shocked if you saw the writing of some people who claim to be professionals. But you're in a good field in terms of job security.

A Master's in this course will look really good if you decide to go overseas and do TESOL. I don't know what you can get in the States, but in Canada a good friend completed the same course and is not using the degree at all in his current line of work.

If you want to go overseas, the master's will get you a university job in Turkey (from my experience). I've lived in Istanbul. It's a great city.

definite. do not knock what you do not have. The masters is needed in case you ever want to be in a administration position. Now dig this: in the military nationwide shelter all you want to get your commision is 12 college credit; a B.A. to make major; and a Masters degree to change right into a colonel. No Masters - no colonel. that is an same way in civilian jobs. Upward mobility demands a sheep pores and skin.

There is a great demand for Technical Writing. If that is your interest and you have the degree and if you live in CA, you have everything set for you. Just start with talking to some technical recruiters and you must be on the roll.
