Poetry is a fading art and I encourage you to put forth your best efforts to increase its exposure to the intellectually undernourished of this day and age. It is a beautiful blend of logic and creativity, a truly graceful use of the written language.

It's only lame if you write bad poetry. I would start by submitting all you can to poetry journals, etc. There are some websties out there where you can post poetry. Yes, people do read poetry still. I've never really looked to be published for my poetry, but I have published a few poems and a short story in high school and college publications. Check around you school and see if you have any literary publications.
I have a friend who has been writing poetry since she was young, and she was always taken seriously. She just graduated from Grad School for writing poetry, too.

Poetry is awesome, I started writing it in the fifth grade thanks to the coolest teacher I ever had. I write off and on, and in my senior year of high school I took a creative writing class and got an A+ on my poetry final project and some really great reviews from my classmates! I've never published anything though, but in researching I think the best way to start is to get your stuff copyrighted first so that it's protected. I'll add the link to the forms.
Recently I've been writing fanfiction(I write House fanfic and have the link to my stuff in my 360 blogroll), which can be a really good way to keep up your writing skills, since you mentioned you write short stories. Hope I could help a little :) ♥

Do not ever think that poetry is no longer read. The market might not be as large as the market for fiction, but there are still a lot of people out there who will pick up a book of poems if they are interested enough.
As I understand it, the process for publishing a book of poetry is more or less the same as publishing a book of fiction, but I think that the selection process is more stringent. Also, you must be prepared to meet with a lot of criticism for your work. Poetry critics tend to be more acerbic and cutting in their remarks than fiction critics (though that is only from my experience). But do not be daunted by them; instead, keep their more constructive comments to heart, and use them to help in improving your writing.
I have only had one poem published in a local magazine, but apart from that, my knowledge of such things is gleaned from my professors, who write both fiction and poetry and get them published as well.

A lot of people have poetry published, at this point people usually only read classic poetry because now almost anyone can be published.. You might as well do it.

I don't think it's lame at all.
Well, if you read some of my poetry, you might think it's pretty lame. I actually did get some of it published though, in a college literary magazine. That's about as far as I got.
There's nothing wrong with having this kind of dream. Don't give up if this is truly your passion. Be prepared, however, to face a lot of rejection in the meantime, if you haven't already.
Here's a link that may be helpful.

I live in New York City and hundreds of us (maybe more!) write and perform our poetry on a regular basis. It's more lucrative to perform it. If you develop a reputation, you get chosen to be featured and paid. It's hard to get published, but can be done if you keep on submitting it. Other poets take it seriously and that's what counts!

tons of people read poetry. Only the nonintellectuals consider it lame.Age has nothing to do with talent. If this is your passion, don't let what others think dissuade you. Research how to get published and stick with what you believe in.
