Yes. As long as you make your cleaning strokes from center of cd or DVD to the outer rim.

Stroke from inner to outer, not circular around CD or DVD.

If the CD or DVD is reading OK, I would leave it alone, as a laser beam is reading thru the outer coating to the inner pits and valleys that make up the digital (+ or -) or (on or off) bits being read.

For about US $19.95 you can get a professional cleaning machine that does a supurb job and if you have a lot of CD's and DVD's, it would be a good investment.

The data on a cd is molded into the plastic - it is then "metalized" with a very thin aluminum layer for reflectivity and then layered with lacquer to protect the surface. If the cd is scratched only into the lacquer layer, a good cleaning will usually bring it back - if the scratch is into the metal layer or plastic, it's toast. A baby wipe won't hurt it a bit - again, the determining factor as to whether you can restore it is whether it's just dirty/dusty/lightly scratched or worse.

Anything as long as it is not magnetised, no metal, and does not produce static electricity.
