Apples are definately different than oranges!
Les Paul and the Strat have diffent accoustics. They are both so close to being peerless that there's little difference in quality. You'll find that the music you play sounds better on one or the other, try both and decide for yourself.

I have been playing for 27 years and own
2 strats and a gibson les paul classic.
The main difference you should be aware of is the "fatness" of the tone your looking for.
A strat is probably a more versatile instrument but a les paul will sound thicker and will distort
easier so if you want to play the pop punk tunes of today a les paul works a little better,
if you are more blues based a strat may be a better choice.

I love les pauls. i love the shape of them and i love the way the neck feels. i also have a strat though. i like my les paul for playing mostly heavy stuff, but that doesn't mean that thats all i use it for. the strat i play with when i want a cleaner and less threatening tone. for just starting out, i recomend sticking with the Strat. it is a great starter package and honestly, the les paul special II just isn't the same as a real les paul. when the time comes for a new axe, sit around a store for a few hours and find a guitar that feels great to play and sounds great to you. you may also want to check out the ibanez starter pack.

If you want quiet I mean super clean tone, a gibson is the best bet. With either guitars, you can play any style of music. It's just a matter of properly adjusting your tone controls according to your tastes. A strat seems to sound buzzy from the 60 hz hum, especially, when you use distortion box. You should try them out first, before you buy them.
