k. one of the best things to do before you absoloutly have to go see your doctor is take the curved end of a nail file, usually found when you open you fingernail or toenail clippers, and hook that underneath ur ingrown toenail, believe me it will hurt, but you have no idea how good it feels afterward, and all that relief. there is no real medicine. if u can't get it out yourself, go see a doctor and they can do this thing where they numb up your toe and cut off the bad toenail. its better to just try and prevent it in the first place.

What I do is soak my foot in warm salt water. Then if I am really sick of the pain very carefully i take a sterile razor blade and gently cut the edge of my toenail that is in the skin. I do this from the cuticle up in a straight line. I try not to cut the skin underneath because that is no fun :-( Then with tweezers i rip the cut part of the toe nail straight out. Try not to rip more skin. Then I put cotton over the damaged area and lots of antibacterial ointment. To prevent future ingrowns I let my toe nails grow out and cut them in a straight line. Do not cut the corners. This is what I do. I would recommend going to a doctor for you and for the sake of lawsuits against me. :-)

This is an old home cure that works. Get your self a small bottle or can of Turpentine. Keep the top of the ingrown nail scraped thin, with a sharp knife. Put turpentine in the corners where the nail turns in, every day. You should have to scrape top of nail once a month. Stop wearing tight or pointed shoes. This cured mine, and took about 6 months. Your only other option is to have a Doctor cut them out.

the best thing you can do for an ingrown toenail is, soak your foot with the infection in salty, hot water for about 30 min, dry off you foot, then take tweazers and lift up the corner of the nail that is in the flesh and stick a little bit of cotton under it. the salty water is to rid the toe of infection with less sting of poroxide and it sooths the foot from pain, the cotton is in the way of the nail, hence proventing it from going back in the skin, leave the cotton in until the nail has grown over it, then pull it out. good luck!

This wont help it come out any easier, but I get ingrown toenails quite a bit and if you will put a little vinegar on the edge of the toenail it will stop the pain. Hope it helps!

If its infected you need antibiotics, you should also take a tiny piece of cotton from a Qtip, roll it up and puch down into the area affected. You want to put a barrier between the skin and the nail so that it can grow over the cotton and out from under the nail.

I have read its hereditary. I'm also told the most effective way to stop it is destroy the quick where that edge of the nail grows from.
