can anybody recommend any decent areas for going out?

go to the city centre to shop and go to Cardiff Bay for the pubs.
Also in the city centre is the millennium stadium and the Civic Centre with its Museum. Its a great city. Also Cardiff Castle in the centre. Just smile and enjoy,dont listen to those jealous people from liverpool.

Go down St Mary st- loads of bars and clubs- if you want something a bit more up market get in a cab and ask them to take you to the Bay.
