It happens. 10-15 per year in our clinic\office. The trend follows women not following up with office visits. Make sure you see your ob\gym when scheduled

Pregnancy with an IUD is rare, but possible - my mother got pregnant with my sister that way.

I would strongly recommend against an IUD especially if you're still a teen - most IUDs fit better once you've had a baby. They also are not recommended if you are not in a monogamous relationship (you're more likely to transmit an STD directly into your uterus with an IUD). Also, many people experience, severe cramping & heavier periods with them.

I used an IUD for about 5 months and had it removed when I got Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (from a normal yeast infection entering the uterus via the IUD strings) and due to the inflammation, the IUD punctured my uterus. Even before that, I had HORRIBLE cramps, terrible bleeding, and every single time I had an orgasm, the IUD caused severe pain - no fun to hurt during sex! FYI - if you're thinking about the IUD because you don't want to use hormonal control, most IUDs have a hormone coating to help prevent pregnancy, so that's no longer a valid reason to choose the IUD over the pill, shot, patch, or ring.

I would STRONGLY recommend looking into alternative contraception. The shot is great, the pill is highly effective....either is a good choice in my book (having used both extensively!). There's also the patch (but some health risks have been linked to that recently, so do your research), as well as a hormone-embedded ring that fits in your vaginal passage around the cervix (kind of like a diaphragm).

Best bet, talk to your gyno - they're the ones with the answers, but go armed with research YOU have done on the internet. There are TONS of choices....

My friend who had an IUD got pregnant with twins. The IUD aborted one of the twins, and she ended up giving birth to the other one. It doesn't seem like the most effective method.

I have heard of someone getting pregnant while having an iud. I know it is considered rare. I dont think there is any one bc method that works %100 but I know a lot of people on the shot.

Why is a teenager using an IUD?
You can get pregnant, but is is the lowest of other birthcontrol methods.

Have heard of it, but it is very rare. IUD is a good choice...many fewer side effects than the pill.
