The FDA had released prior guidelines about safe fish intake, but the latest recommendations finally address tuna. Women of childbearing age, pregnant and nursing women, and children may:
* Eat up to 12 ounces a week of canned light tuna and other low-mercury fish, such as salmon, shrimp, catfish, pollock, and fish sticks.
* Eat up to 6 ounces of fresh or canned albacore (white) tuna. They have more mercury than light tuna.
* Eat up to 6 ounces of locally caught fish.
* Avoid large fish, such as shark, swordfish, king mackerel, and tilefish, which have the most mercury.
I hope this helps.

My husband fishes a lot, and I was also concerned with eating fish / levels of mercury. When you clean a large white fish, like striper, there is often a red section. This where most of the mercury is. You should cut that off before cooking the fish. If not, when you cook the fish, it spreads throughout. With tuna, there's really not a section like that to cut out. The fattiness of the tuna is already spread throughout the fish, so you should be careful.
Of course, what did women do before doctors told them to avoid mercury? They had babies, and most of them were probably fine. Still I figure, why risk it? I've pretty much cut out any questionable fish.

while i was pregnant i ate no red meat. i basically lived off of tuna. My son is one of the healthiest and smartest kids. i know he has passed many of test my the doctors here stating that he is a two yr old on a 5 yr old mind level. the tuna didn't hurt my pregnancy or my son any, and i don't think it would hurt yours. but everyone body are different and you should ask your Doctor. my body is used to eating alot of tuna regularly and may have had something to do with my case, but good luck

Fresh Tuna is limited to 6-0z a week, canned light tuna is limited to 12-oz a week. If you are not sure what kind of fish you can have, go to www.epa.gov/ost/fish
or ask your doctor for a list of fish to avoid
