Freelance is your best bet at this point, but if you're lucky you could find a studio in California that has a need for animators. John Kricfaluci of Spumco has moved back to California to try and revive his company, you may google him (he has a blog too, but I forget the adress). You might just try to contact him for some seasoned advice.
Other than that, if you really want a lot of opportunities to work with an animation studio, you might conisder Japan. They do take animators from all over the world, whereas america, even disney, tends to outsource a lot of their traditional animation overseas.
Also, if you favour Linux, there are a lot of freeware beta applications that are specialized in both Traditional and 3d animation, Synfig being a favourite. Apart from that, there's Toon Boom, Moho (version 5 is the latest) and a handful of others.
If you're already into graphic design, it just might be best to specialise in Flash first, as it will cross over well with layout/design and with animation. You could build an animation portfolio as you go, but Flash and other tweening software apps will allow you to generate income first, more quickly, as flash webdesign is more in demand.

(In reference to first poster) Good luck working with John K if you're a junior!
As stated, there's the gaming industry, feature film industry, documentary industry, a lot of smaller company that specialise in 3D and such. You can become a 3D animator with a traditional 2D animator. I find the later are the most skilled animators...

It depends on whether you're looking at 3d or 2d. Of course there are movies and tv shows. At the moment there aren't any studios doing 2D animated movies, but there are rumours floating around that Pixar is now at the head of Disney's 2D department.
There's also video games, commercials, and also animations used to explain difficult scientific problems to people. I'm sure there's more.
Usually there are seperations in jobs as well. There are your character animators, effects animators, objects animators (cars and such), cloth/fur simulators (3d), modelers (also 3d), texture crew, lighting crew.. the list goes on.

Digital media and animation, digital design is set to dominate the world with our ever changing technology. i find that it is a good field to work on. There are works involving:
1. 3D animation for the media
animation for tv commercials.
cartoon animation. for movies ,etc. (think pixar and walt disney)
3D rendering. (3D scenes of places in newspapers)
all in all, its a big industry. go for it. good luck.
