Slander is verbal, libel is written or published.
And while the standard varies by state, generally any affirmative statement that is both false and harms your reputation is actionable.
If you are serious about pursuing the matter, you should consult with a licensed attorney who can review your case and tell you what your chance of success would be.

If you can prove you have been slandered and can prove the damage as a monetary value, then it may be worth taking them to court. You need to consult an attorney, but it is unlikely that you'd find one who will take the case without some cash up front.

Ignore it. Reasonable people know fact from gossip and who cares what the rest think? Doing something about it, like suing, only draws more attention and let's the person who's been dissin' you that the harassment is working - don't give them the satisfaction.

Take your problem to the person, write a letter to the editor about the Truth. dont take your problems to court, it is a heavy burden upon this society at this point in time. Try to solve it yourself so you won't be cheated and disapointed by the outcome.

For once I agree with Coragryph. Do you know who it is that started the lies? Find out.
