If you are speaking of the pipe on a computer keyboard "|" it is used for redirecting output of a command to the input of another command.

Ditto with reason1000. Also, "named pipes" are part of database structures, used to pipe data... You'd need a database administrator to explain it fully.
In essence, a "pipe" is used to transfer data from one program/command/etc. to another.
