I thought that they are to remain in the far right , pass on the middle lane so the cars have the far left to pass. Am I right or wrong?? Semi's need to make the grade yes, but if they go the speed limit they won't block all 3 lanes. Right?

how can he be blocking the left lane if he is doing the speed limit? asked one poster SIMPLE! if the speed limit is posted 55 for semis and trailers and posted 65 for autos then he is breaking the law! happens all the time in California , each state the law is different i looked up us Patriot act 2001 hr 3162-61012, 49u.s.c. 651320 it shows each state, i see in Ohio some areas the speed limit is posted as 55 for semis and 65 for autos in certain areas, so if that is the case yes they are breaking the law , and they belong in the other 2 lanes. that third lane is for 65 mph!

Semi's can use any lane necessary, but normally they are in the far right lane. These drivers drive for a living and need to make time. Usually they are very cautious and professional, but occasionally you run across one that is not, but it does not mean they are all bad. Ask a trucker what they think about the normal driving habits of the normal public. You may get an ear full.

The lane usage depends on the state, but why would you think a truck should not use the left lane? If it is doing the speed limit, how can he block traffic like you think is going to happen? After all, you don' speed, do you?

Seriously, some states do restrict trucks to not use the left lane, but not all, and not in all areas in some of the states that do. Texas is one of the states that do it by area and I have not yet noticed any difference in the traffic flow between the different areas.

Currenty in Illinois there is no law requiring semi trucks stay in the right and center lanes. This could be different in other states though. Currently the only law regarding freeway lanes in Illinois is that if you are in a passing lane you must pass. There are so many exceptions to this law however it is hard to enforce. I don't know if they are suppose to use the third lane, but I'm not going to argue with a semi.
