My fonts turned to boxes?

The other day I typed up a couple pages of very personal stuff... then my husband's friend came over, so I highlighted all I'd written and changed the font to "symbol". I continued to type. Then suddenly, from the bottom up, all I had typed began to quickly change into boxes. Freaking out, I exited my word doc. and then went back into it. I highlighted all again and tried to change it to a normal font but no matter what font I tried, it would all become just boxes of varying sizes. Anyone know what was going on?

i belive some how u saved it another format i think im not that good with computer feel free to choose a better answer then this
