I have to make an acronym for The Puritans, and make a statement about them, starting each one with the the letter T, then H, then E, and so on... I'm especially having trouble with the "U." Any ideas? I'd appreicate help with any one of the letters!

unadorned OR understated - simple in their dress, manners, religious practices

undramatic - esp. their long, straighforword (some say 'dry' but most of them did not) sermons

unbending OR unyielding -resolute in adhering to their principles (OR undeterred in carrying them out)

underappreciated OR undervalued -- since many know only caricatures of them, not understanding their actual beliefs and contributions (as illustrated by pandaman's description of them --which is itself very 'black and white'!! they were actually far subtler than that, if you ever stopped to read their leaders)

On the last point,

"some critics have credited Puritanism as being the very thing that founded American democracy. This view first appeared in Alexis de Tocqueville's Democracy in America. According to Tocqueville, Puritans were hard-working, egalitarian, and studious."

EDIT (for pandaman):
I have read my theology, and a number of Puritans, and Hawthorne... though I find it rather odd to suggest that Hawthorne should be accepted as a reliable, historical witness to what the Puritans believed! (I actually don't necessarily disagree with the use of "unequivocating"... more with the description that follows it, esp. the notion that 'witch-hunting' was a defining characteristic of the whole movement)

UNEQUIVOCAL-- absolute; unqualified; not subject to conditions or exceptions. The puritans' saw the state of man in very black and white terms. There were no shades of gray. A similar world view that gave rise to the USTULATION (the act of burning) witches -- an act that shows the UTMOST disdain for humanity. Don't ya think? ; )

Oh and perhaps bruhaha (below) should review some of his theology and re-read my post. The puritans were UNEQUIVOCAL in their view of the state of man in their theological perspectives. Perhaps, if Bruhaha were to read Hawthorne (esp. Young Goodman Brown), he would see this dilemna played out in the author's texts.
