You have two main obstacles: money and celebrity.

You have to gather together a lot of money to make a presidential or senate run. Unless you are independently wealthy, you with have to either gain support from a political party (they will be able to find funding) or gather a lot of 'grass root' contributions. The problem to gathering 'grass root' contributions is mainly die to the second obstacle, celebrity.

As a 'common' person, people don't know who you are. Even if your ideas are great, few people would support an unknown. Also, if you are a 'nobody' to the public, you will not be able to gain 'grass root' contributions. Gaining notoriety is going to require some money (see obstacle 1) and creativity.

I would start by involving myself in the local government. Start with city council and move up. This will make you known and you will build support from super voters. This will also give you some experience in government.

Start out as a Senator-aid. Get contacts with important people and slowly work your way up. You could start out being a Attorney general and then a governor.
Good luck!

Lie his or her *** off, and collect tons of money from corporations, special interest groups, and from the religious extremes. In short a common person doesn't have a chance.
Sorry, but it's true.
