u could try Lord of the Rings: tactics, its pretty kool.

Empire Earth I and II are kool
Heroes of Might and Magic IV is a good fantasy turned based

"Warlords III: Darklords Rising" is a favorite of me and my family's. You can play up to eight people off of one computer, single player campaign, online play(unsure if it's still active though) and single play random maps, as well as make your own maps, and customize your playable race.
There's probably a Warlords four or five by now though, so you may want to check those out instead. I had hours of fun with Warlords III, so I suggest you check out the Warlords series.

civilization 4 is a great turn based strat, but i think youre looking for turn based RPG. The best are X com-ufo defense (OLD SCHOOL), and the fallout series. I really, really loved the fallout series.
