To fill services and needs that the market will not or cannot fill.

In small countries, government corporations are needed (eg. the post office, telephone companies) because there may not be enough business for one company, let alone a competitive market.

In other countries, certain institutions (eg. the police, the military) need to be run out of (hopefully) an independent and unbiased government to ensure equal treatment for all.

The fascists in the US government rail against people like Chavez and other Central and South American leaders, but the fact is, they are the faces of new capitalism: let the market work, and the government fills a need when companies won't. That is how many new jobs are created, by restarting old factories that were unproductive and having the government run them.

National Defense is the only thing the feds should be doing, the rest should be taken care of the by states and municipalities. This question could be boiled down to cover only what the private sector can't take care of and that's precious little. Government at all levels could be pared down to provide only national defense and contracts management, the rest could be taken care of by those contracts. If you take it to extremes, there really isn't anything which can't be handled by outside contractors. The opposite of that is socialism where the government does everything for you and me. That would suck worse!

To serve the well being of the republic and the people equally. Some people believe that the good of the people should come first but really without the republic the people wouldnt live here and without the people the republic wouldnt exist.
