No record of when or who, it happened too long
ago. Sometime in thousands of years B.C. The
first discovery of it may have been in meteorites,
as someone else suggested. The Sumerians usually get credit for being the first who were able
to extract it from ore and work it, but the Chinese
may have been onto it as early.

I am not sure if they are credited for its discovery, but the ancient Greeks are one of the first civilizations to make extensive use of the metal.
