ok, i am a single mother of 2 baby boys. they are 1 and 2. also, they are biracial. my question is, i want to raise them to know both of their ethnicities, but i live with my parents, and dont' know that much about the african american history or culture. oh, i know enough to get by, but i want to go deeper and teach them more about who they are on both backgrounds. asking their father to do it is out of the question because he is completely out of their lives. does anyone know of any good websites or books about the african american history and culture? yes, i know plenty of african americans, but i don't know how to come out and ask them. and please, no racially discriminating comments, please. i am asking to get some knowledge, and don't have time for ignorance.

One of the best places to find the kind of information you are looking for is church. There are many "black" Churches where your children will be exposed to people from that side of their heritage. Websites and Books are not going to replace just spending time with people. If you are not a church goer, later on you could just send your children to events such as vacation bible school, etc. One of my best friends growing up was bi-racial. That was back in the 1960's and 1970's. It was never easy for her. She was discriminated against and called names. I always took up for her but I wasn't always around. Most of the kids in our school were white. I think it would have been easier on her to have kids of both races in her school. Her mother didn't want her to learn anything about her black culture and she resented her Mother for that. I am pleased to see you have already made the decision not to do that. Just love your boys and when they get old enough; they will decide for themselves. Don't focus on race so much; it will work itself out.

I am glad that you are trying to help them get in touch with there African American Heritage. There are a lot of children's books that feature African Americans. Start there. You can also point out that even though you and your sons have different skin colors you are still very much apart of each other. Also let them know that there are know different from anyone else.

When they are older take them to the library. Try and learn more yourself as they get older. Don't be afraid to ask your african american friends. They will be happy to help and share. Tell them exactly how you told us. Good Luck.
