castro has done a wonderful job with what he had to do it with. I wish that he could have gotten his recognition by us that he deserves. You cannot rate the accomplishments of this man and what he has done for his country(save that few that left because they were unwilling to redistribute the wealth). If you go back pre-castro and see what happened before him -all the social ills that you can name and all of the wealth cocentrated into the hands of a few under a real tyrant known as Juan Batista, then and only then can you give this man his real credit.
We had a bad relationship with him in the very beginning
because of our support of the Batista govmt in the war that Castro was fighting to gain power to bring prosperity to the masses who were frightfully poor.We switched or attempted to switch sides when we saw that Castro was winning. But Castro wasnt buying that - this was the basis for the bad relations between us and Fidel.(Unfortunate) In those days democracy was not a priority for us. We supported many dictators all for OUR interests.
This is mainly why we are having problems today - nuff said.

Maybe a little of both. He certainly has the loyalty of millions of his people, well the ones that stayed in Cuba. They seem to adore him.
Maybe if the economic situation were different he would be considered truly great. I think the US embargo has done tremendous damage to the island. But, look how many educated people there are in Cuba, all the doctors. Something is going on there that is successful.

I really hate to say this but I hate Fidel Castro. To me he is not a good leader of his country. To me he is like a control freak. It is like he wants to control all of his people and tell them what to do and what they cant do. He is so stupid that he dont realize that people are leaving everyday because they cant stand him. He needs to wake up and smell the coffee. Because if he dont soon then there is not going to be any people there for him to control. Just my 2 cents...

He's a Complete Moron, But If you look at the island literacy rate, well in that case you can say yes he does a good job. As far as, leadership goes well, yeah he does a great job as well, there are a lot of Cubans that hate him, but many in Cuba Love, Respect and Admire Him. So, that being said who are we to judge. (Huge Moron)

A bit of both. He is loved by millions (in spite of what the American based Cubans would like to think) and hated by millions. He has stood up to US hostility and aggression for decades. He sends doctors to other countries in south america and africa. But he also, like most powerful people, seems to be totally wrapped up in himself.

he brought cuba the highest standard of living in the caribean, the best health care in latin america, and free education for all - all while under the boycott of the world's most powerful nation. i am opposed to violation of civil liberties, but if you compare castro to some of the right wing latin american dictators we eagerly funded and killed for, his people are a lot better off.

He is a pitiful old man and a lifetime con-artist. His country lies in tatters, but he is worth well over $500 million. Communism is good for the people, but not for him. Too many gullible Cubans.
What a schmuck.
